By DjackToday is a wonderful day Yankee fans, David Ortiz aka Big Papi, has played his final game against the New York Yankees, thank God. I hate David Ortiz with a passion, I do respect David Ortiz for his greatness, but he's murdered the Yankees for the past 12 years so I'm happy to see him gone. I still have flashbacks to 2004 when he murdered the Yankees in front of my eyes, how could you do that to a child David Ortiz. Well, tonight was his last night ever playing in Yankee stadium, the last time he'd go to war against the team that was his biggest foe for the past decade. He would go onto strikeout and walk before being pinch hit for, sayonara buddy. Big Papi didn't do anything this series against us, he didn't even manage to get a hit, one of the rare occasions that's ever happened. The Yankees could've easily rolled over and quit on the season after getting swept by the Blue Jays, instead they played just as hard this series as they did for the past 2 months which was refreshing to see. What was also refreshing to see was C.C. Sabathia looking like his old self on that mound tonight as he mowed down one of the best lineups in all of baseball. Mark Teixeira's walk off grand slam yesterday was also a nice touch to one of Tex's last games of his career. The Yankees were officially eliminated from playoff contention tonight, honestly any Yankee fan should be very proud of the way this team has played since the trade deadline. No one would've thought that we could stay competitive in the wildcard race and have a winning season after being HUGE seller's at the deadline. Also, Gary Sanchez was discovered, that was probably the biggest blessing of this season, it's nice to have a god like being on your team so I'm glad we found our's. The pitching staff really started coming around in the second half of the year with Tanaka being absolute stud, C.C. exceeding expectations, Chad Green looking like he could potentially be a nice piece in the rotation before he went down, and Luis Cessa also gave us a lot of quality outings during this stretch run. A lot of great things have come from these last two months. I know we have another series with the Orioles left so I won't go on a yearly recap right now, but I wish this was how the season ended a nice series sweep of the Boston Red Sox. Oh well, I guess knocking the Orioles out of the wildcard spot will be an even sweeter ending to our season.
By DjackI'm sorry Cubs fans, it'll be 108 years and counting after this postseason thanks to this asshole fan who just jinxed your team. We all know the Cubs have horrible luck to begin with from the Billy goat to Bartman, the Cubs just always seem to run into some sort of bad luck on the path to glory. I'm sure some other idiots have done this in the past and all of them have failed. I don't know why Cubs fans would do this to themselves, do you guys like being the best losers in baseball or something, like c'mon you're finally the clear cut favorite to win it all, and you go out and do some dumb shit like this to just throw your season down the drain. If I'm the Cubs owner I'm finding out where this guy lives, going to his house, and driving him straight to the tattoo removal parlor. I'm not taking any chances after 108 years of bad luck, I'm making sure this horrible horrible streak comes to an end. In all honesty, I'm happy this Cubs fan did this for a few reasons. One, he jinxed the Cubs, since this has gotten so much attention on social media it definitley classifies as a jinx of enough magnitude to ruin the Cubs World Series chances. Two, I think the Cubs unfortunate streak of being losers is good for baseball, with the Red Sox curse broken, what dramatic World Series drought are we going to have without the Cubs. The league needs a team they can hype and be like, oh this is their year they're finally going to win it, and then they lose at some point in the postseason and the cycle continues. As much as I'd love to see the city of Chicago go into full blown pandemonium after a World Series victory, I'd love nothing more to see the Cubs get their hearts ripped out in the World Series after finally thinking they were a shoe in to win it. Also this douche bag fan will look like an idiot so that's another plus.
By MukTheo Epstein getting a 5-year, just under $50 million dollar extension? I'll take 'That's Obvious' for 500 points please.
Theo is one of the best minds in baseball, helping the Red Sox win their first World Series in 86 years, and now helping the Cub's to their first 100-win season since 1935. He has done a tremendous job in Chicago, helping grow a strong young team and acquire key pieces to put together a World Series contender team. They love him in Chi-Town, and the whole team, fan base, and organization trust him. This contract extension is just about the most obvious move that has been made all season in the MLB. The Cub's are looking for their first World Series in 107 years and this year is as good of a bet as they'll ever have. This team will likely be able to keep it's core players together for some time, because these boys love to play with each other and love to play for this organization, and a big part of that is due to Theo. By DjackAs most of you know the Red Sox clinched the AL East division title last night. That's the last thing us Yankee fans wanted to happen in our stadium, but we had no say in the decision because the Blue Jays lost, automatically giving the Red Sox the clinch before the Yankee game was even over. The Red Sox were up three runs going into the bottom of the ninth, they were all set to dance and celebrate all over our field as they win the division title. The Yankees had different plans though, Craig Kimbrel loaded the bases, and walked in a run before getting pulled from the game. Some bum came into replace him, what a mistake that was, he got the first batter Starlin Castro out, but up came Marky Mark Teixeira whose legendary career will be coming to an end in a few days. Grand Slam, Mark Teixeira hits a walk off grand slam to beat the Red Sox. This was such a satisfying feeling, not only did we beat the Red Sox, but we got to celebrate on the field as they had to walk into the clubhouse before they could start their festivities. Of course I'd love to be in the Red Sox position instead, this is a good consolation prize though. Also, this was Mark Teixeira's only career walk off home run during the regular season, so he made sure he crossed that off his MLB bucket list before he called it quits. This will probably be the last good moment of the season so I'm really cherishing it while I can because come October I'll be depressed watching all these teams play for the World Series as my Yankees are home on the couch watching with me. Come next season though, watch out Red Sox, watch out AL East, the new generation of Yankees are here to kick some ass.
By DjackHuge news for San Francisco Giants fans, Madison Bumgarner's wingman Johnny Cueto will return just in time to save the Giants season. Currently, the Giants are fighting for wildcard spots with the Mets and Cardinals, they're currently a game ahead of the Cardinals for the second wildcard spot, and a half game behind the Mets for the top wildcard spot. Cueto will only get to pitch one more game during the regular season, but him being able to come back is really going to boost the Giants chances at winning in the NLDS, NLCS, and World Series if they are to make it past the wildcard game which Madison Bumgarner will probably pitch. Cueto helped the Kansas City Royals win a world series title last year as he was one of the only effective starting pitchers in that rotation, he had several games against the Astros and Mets last postseason where he was completely dominate. He did have an awful start against the Blue Jays, but against that lineup, c'mon cut him some slack, Cueto is 17-5 this year with a 2.75 ERA, if the NL didn't have so many good pitchers I'd say he has Cy Young type numbers, and he's not even the ace, Bumgarner is. Imagine that one two punch in a 5 or 7 game series where you have to face each of them multiple times, I feel bad for whatever team has to do that because their odds are not looking good. Cueto coming back makes the Giants a real threat if they can make it through all this wildcard shenanigans.
By UppyTim Tebow is a god. In his first at bat, on the first FUCKING pitch he saw, Tim Tebow went oppo fucking taco and hit a home run to left center. I can't even begin to explain the actual necessary attributes needed to hit a professional home run, let alone go oppo. Everyone knows lefties love to pull the ball. As a lefty "college baseball player" I can assure you that pulling the ball is the easiest thing in the world. Going oppo is like pouring the milk before your cereal: it just doesn't make sense some times. Why would I hit a single to left when I can hit a double to right/right center?
Tebow going oppo to left center on his first pitch is just awesome. If he can pull this off it might be one of, if not THE most impressive sports transition ever. While every other sport is more physically taxing and athletically challenging than baseball, baseball requires such an unique set of skills to excel that going a decade without playing and then going yard on your first pitch is something only God can make happen. Is Tebow literally Jesus? I say... maybe. I need this man to touch my forehead and bless me. I'm all in on Tebow. Hated him as a QB but love him as an outfielder and our lord and savior Jesus Christ. He's a literal angel in the outfield. Oh the analogies that I can make if he reaches the New York Mets MLB team. I can only pray. By DjackThe last thing I was going to watch last night was the Yankee game. We had an emotional Marlins game on, Monday night football, and the Presidential debate so there was no need for me to watch a pointless regular season Yankee game. It turned out to be a very a chaotic game as the benches cleared twice, this game early on became a battle of the unwritten rules of baseball. Luis Severrino barely hit Josh Donaldson early in the game on his elbow pad, clearly unintentional. The next inning J.A. Happ throws behind Chase Headley, so okay he had his retaliation chance it's over now, wrong with the next pitch he made sure he hit him, this cleared the benches but it didn't escalate to anything. Severrino was back on the mound and he started throwing at a Blue Jays batter missing him with the first pitch and getting him with the second. This set off a ticking time bomb, both benches ran out and things got ugly fast. Punches were thrown, players and coaches were ejected, and former Yankee Russell Martin was trying to tussle with Gary Sanchez. When I saw that I laughed, Russell Martin is first off just still sour we kicked him to the curb, second off Sanchez is double this dwarf's size so Martin was clearly picking a bad fight. I would've loved to see the AL ROY get a KO on live TV to add to his ROY resume. The Yankees have no shot of making the playoffs but at least they're still giving us great entertainment to watch, they just picked a really bad night to put on such an electric performance. Oh yeah, we also ended up winning that game so nice job Blue Jays, you let us get in your head and now your wild card hopes took a painful blow because of it.
By DjackThe Mets-Marlins game was one of the saddest baseball games I've ever seen, the pregame remembrance of the Marlins fallen brother Jose Fernandez did not only have the people on the field crying, but I'm pretty sure everyone watching at home was crying as well. The way they handled this was masterful, the Mets and Marlins embraced in the middle of the diamond giving hugs and exchanging prayers, showing just how much bigger than baseball this really was. The Mets hung a Fernandez jersey in their dugout once again and that just shows so much respect, all the Marlins players wore Fernandez jerseys, and it was just a sad somber aura around this game. The Marlins gathered around the pitchers mound after their embrace with the Mets, they each wrote something into the dirt on Jose Fernandez's mound. They then huddled around as Giancarlo Stanton said a few words before they went out to play ball. It was truly a sad sight to see when the Marlins took the field and a good amount of their players still had tears running down their face, it just wasn't right, how were these guys supposed to play baseball a day after losing their best friend. It must've been real tough for them, I respect every Marlins player after yesterday, you are stronger than all of us. The baseball game had to be played, the Mets are in the thick of a wildcard race so you know they still want to win this game, but you know the Marlins are going to be playing for Jose. With all the emotions going thru the Marlins players heads I thought it'd be almost impossible for them to even focus on this game enough to win, but I guess Jose was watching over them. Dee Gordon was the first batter of the game, he's a left handed hitter but he stepped in as a righty with Jose's helmet on and took a pitch right handed to honor Jose. After that he switched to the left side of the plate, he took another ball high to make the count 2-0, the third pitch Dee Gordon crushed into the right field bleachers in one of the most magical moments I've ever seen watching baseball. Dee Gordon teared up running around the bases, and as soon as he stepped on home plate kissed his finger and pointed to the sky, he broke down, and could no longer control the extreme emotion going through his body. This home run reminded me a lot of the 9/11 Mike Piazza home run, that's the magnitude that this had for Miami. Jose was definitley watching over the Marlins as they won 7-3, he was also definitley swinging with Dee Gordon as they hit that home run together for the city of Miami. RIP Jose Fernandez you'll never be forgotten.
By DjackToday is a sad day for any sports fan, Jose Fernandez, pitcher for the Miami Marlins was announced dead this morning. He was killed in a freak boating accident at about 3am this morning off the shore of Miami Beach. As soon as I heard about the news this morning I had flashbacks to when I was a little kid and had learned Sean Taylor, safety for the Washington Redskins, had died, it was a nauseating feeling that just seemed to sit with me. Today I feel that same feeling, it's so sad to see a 24 year old young man with all the potential in the world gone far too soon, the part that makes it worse was he enjoyed every breathe he took on the baseball diamond. He was a genuinely amazing human being that I never heard a single bad thing said about. He was quite the entertainer for the fans, he always put on a show, and he always did it with a smile on his face. I remember watching him earlier this year against the Mets, and he would just mow through the Mets lineup without breaking a sweat, and I'd think to myself this kid is the next special thing in this league. Now we will never get to see him blossom into the player he would've been, and frankly that sucks. I'll always have that thought in my head of how great Jose Fernandez would've been if God didn't take him so soon. The way he played though just through his very short career was impressive to say the least, he sported a career 2.52 ERA, had like 38 wins, 17 loses, and 589 strikeouts. He was the real deal, he was such a positive guy which makes this so much harder to swallow, like why must they take away the guy that appreciated every moment he had on that field, he never took it for granted. He was an electric young pitcher who left many fans in awe after watching him leave the mound after a dominate inning, unfortunately we will never get to see him dominate a lineup or crack a world class smile again. I feel awful for his family and friends that had a real connection with this wonderful human being, I wouldn't even be able to imagine what this must feel like for his parents, knowing your son had an entire life of joy, memories, and doing what he loves taken away from him the blink of an eye. This is horrible day in the sports community, I feel for all of his Miami Marlins teammates, and I hope to god I wake up from this nightmare. RIP Jose Fernandez gone way too soon but you will never be forgotten. By DjackIt honestly frustrates me that this is even a conversation at all, obviously Gary Sanchez should be AL Rookie of the Year. He's played in 44 games and has 19 homeruns, is batting .337, has an OBP% of .412, and has 38 RBI's. Those are absolutely ludicrous numbers for a guy that made his first start of the season in early August. He single-handily helped carry the Yankees back into the playoff picture, he literally made us competitive again, and although we probably won't make the playoffs, we were sellers at the deadline and his call up alone made us a way better team. The Yankees have now found their #3 hitter for the next ten years, almost no other team can say about a 23 year old on their roster. I know everyone is saying, "but what about Michael Fulmer," what about him, he's had a great rookie season, he's probably been one of the most consistently good starters the Tigers have, but did he turn his team into potential playoff contender single-handily after being sellers at the deadline, NO. This kid just picked the wrong year to be a rookie in the AL, not Gary's fault that he became the best catcher in the league over night. Worst case scenario, if these voters feel the absolute need to vote Fulmer ROY, at least make Sanchez and Fulmer, Co-ROY's. There has been Co-MVP's in football with McNair and Manning, so why not make these two Co-ROY's so no one can complain about the other not winning since they're both deserving of the award. All I know is that if Sanchez doesn't win the award the entire city of New York should start a riot because that would be a true travesty. Make the right decision voters, if Sanchez isn't a ROY in some form, Yankee fans will gather up and revolt, no pressure though.
