3/3/2017 Samaje Perine is the Perfect Complementary Power Running Back in the 2017 NFL DraftRead NowBy DjackCombine week is a huge week in the football world for crazed fans. You get to see which prospects put in the work to make a name for themselves, and which ones watched a little too much tv and ate too much chips, instead of preparing for the big day. The big names are always the ones the critics follow so intensely, what numbers will they put up in an irrelevant vertical leap test, even though players of that caliber shouldn't even be remotely judged off those silly test, but whatever, that's just how these things work. The point I'm trying to make is this is the perfect time for a low key name to become a hot target. Today, Samaje Perine, did exactly that.
Perine wasn't the best running back on his own team how can any GM expect him to become successful in the NFL, he couldn't even keep his starting job in college. Well, Perine isn't supposed to be an every down back, Perine is a bruiser, he wants to initiate contact, battle ram through people, and pick up tough yards. He certainly won't be a 1st round selection, probably not a 2nd either, but come 3rd or 4th round Perine's a name that will be talked about a bunch. Here's why. Although he was overshadowed at Oklahoma by Joe Mixon's unbelievable season, Perine has quietly been one of the best running backs in college football the last 3 years. Showing durability and a continued drive towards excellence, along with remarkable consistency, Samaje Perine is exactly what a NFL team should want. He ran for 4,122 yards in 3 seasons with the Sooners, eclipsing 1k yards each season he was there. Throw in his 51 total touchdowns and 6.0 YPC average, all the sudden you're looking at one of the most underrated backs in the draft. At the combine today he made quite the name for himself when he banged out 30 reps on the bench press, most of any running back by far, and more than most offensive lineman. Safe to say power and pass blocking isn't something you'll be worried about with this guy. Whatever team needs another running back to match with their shiftier, speedier, more nibble back, Perine would be the perfect complement to whomever that may be. When that thought crossed my mind, the pairing Perine with a speed shifty guy, a lightbulb immediately went off in my head. This guy is the perfect fit for the Giants and I'm more than sold on him already. Instead of spending a boat load of money on running back by signing AP or Charles, let's not overreact to our running back situation and just draft this guy to pair with Perkins. Perkins and Perine will be the better version of Bradshaw and Jacobs, I can already see it now, and it looks so damn glorious. Jerry Reese take notes, hope you realize what I'm realizing and make this happen.

By DjackThis isn't just some random thought, John Lynch, new GM of the 49ers, said today that the team could potentially land their next quarterback via trade. Now, there isn't many QB's on the market that would really be worth trading for, especially one's that are believed to be future franchise quarterbacks. One certainly comes to mind though, Jimmy Garappolo.
Jimmy Garappolo has already been deemed the next great thing, despite only starting 3 games in his career. Garappolo certainly looked extremely effective in his only few starts with the Patriots, although to think that Belichick doesn't play a big role in covering up his flaws would be an absurd assumption. The potential and ability certainly seem to be there, though. 49ers have a great offensive minded head coach in Kyle Shanahan, who has proven time and time again that he can elevate the play of whatever quarterback he has put in front of him. This would be a huge move for a 49ers franchise looking to get back their Bill Walsh, Joe Montana, and Steve Young glory days. Only question is... are the Patriots wiling to trade Garappolo? For the right price you can buy anything in life, and the 49ers should be wiling to give up everything for this stud. A chance at acquiring a franchise quarterback for the next 10-15 years makes your job a whole lot easier. Patriots will still have Brady playing quarterback for them in 2017 no matter what, but will that be his final season. Brady said he wants to play for 5 more years, he's certainly in great shape and has healthier dieting habits than anyone in the league, so if anyone can do it's Brady. If the Pats are wiling to depart with Garappolo the 49ers will have to give up their #2 overall pick this year, maybe another first round pick for next year, and then a bunch of little bonus players or picks to sweeten the pot. John Lynch will certainly have to whip up a delight of a deal to get the Patriots to trade their young stud quarterback. Will John Lynch be able to do the impossible and save the 49ers franchise, or will he flop? What do you think? By DjackColin Kaepernick has officially announced he will be opting out of his contract and testing the free agent waters. The thing is will any team be wiling to throw him a line and give him a shot to show he's still capable of what he did in 2012 and 2013. Of course some team will pick him, but will he get a real opportunity to start somewhere, and prove what he's worth. He didn't make it easy on himself with carrying the baggage of the national anthem debacle, I'm certain teams won't even give him a look for that reason. A desperate enough team like the Jets or the Browns will pick him up, give him a shot like they do with every other decent quarterback that hits the free agent market. The thing those teams fail to realize is there's a reason they're hitting the market, they just aren't that good.
However, I do believe Kaepernick is a very unique and wonderful talent, he just doesn't have the drive and motivation to be a great QB in the NFL. Kaepernick is more interested in sticking to his vegan diet and starting public protest at work than playing football. He proved that to everyone last year. Kaepernick was told to gain weight when he was coming back from his injury, he was told to bulk up 15-20 lbs, and this guy couldn't do it because he wasn't able to on his vegan diet. Alright, cool, it's your choice just don't expect teams to be accepting of your personal choices when it gets in the way of your performance. Secondly, he started a nation wide scandal by taking a knee during the national anthem, not a lot of employers are going to think too fondly of that. We know Kaepernick won't be paying a visit to Dallas because Jerry Jones wouldn't stand for that shit, no pun intended. I'd like to see Kaepernick get a job somewhere and actually get an opportunity to play, unfortunately I don't think that'll happen. He's an interesting player to watch, always exciting even when he plays erratic, so to not see him on the field this year is going to suck. I really hope one of these boring franchises pick him up and he gets a chance to shine again, or at the very least become a capable starter for a few years with a team creating some stability. Even the latter of that seems to be a stretch at this point. He'll either be a backup somewhere, no one will want him whatsoever, or some brave soul will give him a shot. By DjackThe feeling around this whole Tony Romo situation is that Jerry Jones, out of respect for Romo, will release him and allow him to sign with whomever he pleases. The Broncos have now been deemed as the front runners to land Romo, I don't know how credible that source is, but eveyone seems to think that move would make a ton of sense, I'd diagree. It may look like an obvious fit since they have the ready to win now defense and a couple good weapons on offense. However, the offensive line for the Broncos isn't very good and neither is the weather. Romo is used to playing in Dallas, always warm weather, always a great offensive line, and now he'll have neither of those things with Denver. Romo's statistcs in cold weather drop dramtically, that'll play a bigger role in his decision than you might think. I just don't see Denver as the right fit.
Romo needs first class protection, the Broncos can't provide that, which in turn would leave them with a dismantled Tony Romo. At that point he'd be completely useless to the Broncos and every other team in the league because one more injury and it's got to be over, right. Romo shouldn't go to Denver, not if he actually wants to last a few more years, I seriously doubt he'll last longer than Peyton did, and we all saw how ugly that got at the end. Plus, when Manning was their the offensive line was a lot better and he didn't rely on mobility like Romo. Romo would definitely be a huge upgrade from what the Broncos had last year, however I just don't think he would get the best out of his ability in Denver, or be able to stay healthy all season for that matter. Texans are the ideal destination, essentially the Dallas of the AFC in terms of location. Texans have all the pieces all they need is a QB and Tony Romo could be that guy to bring them to be New England's #1 competitior. Who knows where Romo will end up, only thing we know is that he'll go to a team that he knows can compete for a championship. Any team he goes to will essentially become 10x better since acquiring a QB of his talent is one of the hardest things to do in football. As long as Romo is healthy he'll be making some noise for whatever team he ends up joining. If that just so happens to be the Broncos and he avoids injury and cold weather syndrome, they'll certainly be playing for a Lombardi trophy. |
