5/28/2017 Would Chris Paul Joining the San Antonio Spurs Put Them over the Golden State Warriors in the West?Read NowBy DjackOh boy, these Chris Paul to San Antonio rumors are getting me way too excited. The 2016-17 season hasn't even ended and I'm already looking forward to free agency because that's what we do as sports fans. Now, the odds of San Antonio landing Chris Paul seem to be really slim, however it makes for a very interesting conversation. If he were to leave his current situation in LA and go to SA, would the Spurs be able to take down the Golden State Warriors? I believe they'd be able to and here's why.
Chris Paul is exactly what the Spurs need and the Spurs are exactly what Chris Paul needs, them uniting could create a transcendent bond. Chris Paul wouldn't be able to dominate the ball as much in the Spurs system, although I believe Popovich would be able to get the most out of Paul's ability. Paul would be able to orchestrate the Spurs offense to a whole other level, they've never had a floor general quite like him. Tony Parker was a great player 5 years ago, but even back then he wasn't close to as good as CP3. Chris Paul would also really elevate LaMarcus Aldridge, a guy they've had nothing but trouble with getting involved offensively since they signed him. Aldridge and Paul would be great with the pick n roll combo and then they'd have Kawhi to lean on for his prolific scoring in isolation. Spurs would reach new heights offensively behind the leadership of Paul running the offense. Chris Paul would reach new heights in terms of his legacy with the Spurs because they know how to win. Paul has all the stats and highlights to be an all time great, problem is he lacks the playoff luster that'll cement his legacy as one of the best pure point guards ever. Finally he'd be able to reach the conference finals and maybe even win a ring while he's at it. The Spurs were already the second best team in the West without Chris Paul, so adding him would not only secure that position, but it would also start threatening the best team in the West, the Golden State Warriors. All the facts are there that it'd be a great series and the Spurs could ultimately prevail. Paul is better than Steph, a lot of you won't agree since Steph is flashy, but anyone with any basketball IQ knows Chris Paul is the better pure PG. Kawhi and Durant essentially cancel each other out, both are great on both sides of the floor, so they'd completely just cancel each other out. Assuming LaMarcus Aldridge returns to his Portland days with the addition of Chris Paul helping him out offensively, I believe he's just as much of an offensive threat as Klay Thompson or Draymond Green. The Warriors do have the extra star, that's what separates them from everyone else, however the Spurs have Popovich, and he makes up for the lack of a 4th star. Throw in the fact the Spurs will have Danny Green, Jonathon Simmons, and Tony Parker as well, I think the Spurs will takeout the Warriors if they can add Chris Paul. The Spurs were up 20 before Kawhi went down in the Western Conference Finals, so if anything that shows the Spurs were able to compete with the Warriors even without Chris Paul. Adding a superstar of his caliber that makes every player on the court that much better is the key ingredient in getting this Spurs team over the hump.
