Welterweight Champ, Tyron Woodley, stated last week that he began his "champ camp", preparing for a July return, despite the fact that he still does not have an opponent scheduled. Woodley spoke today to "UFC Unfiltered", stating that he has began training, and has been actively seeking an opponent, and that finding one has been harder than he would have thought.
Woodley had this to say about his potential opponents:
“There’s a lot of fighters who say, ‘I’ll fight anybody, anytime, anywhere,’ but they really don’t mean that,” Woodley (17-3-1 MMA, 7-2-1 UFC) said. “If Conor McGregor wanted to fight me, he has an opportunity to do so. So does (Michael) Bisping. So does Georges St-Pierre. So does Nick Diaz. So does Nate Diaz."
As we know, McGregor is looking for a boxing match with Mayweather, and Bisping and GSP are supposed to be facing off sometime in July or August for the Middleweight belt, so for me, the Diaz's both make a ton of sense. Nick Diaz has been out for two and a half years at this point, and according to Dana White has turned down several fights, but a title shot, that is something I don't see why he would turn down. It would be a big money fight for both fighters, because the Diaz's always pack arenas, and with a belt on the line, it will only up the value.
The current rankings for the Welterweight division is tricky, as Wonderboy is still at the top, but fell short twice against Woodley going for the belt, and Robbie Lawler sits below him, but is rumored to be looking to face off against "Cowboy" Cerrone this summer. Demian Maia and Jorge Masvidal are both deserving, but the two are facing off against one another at UFC 211 this month, so that really doesn't leave many challengers who are absolutely "deserving". That's why I think a fight with Nick Diaz would be a great move for both sides, and the UFC.
Come back already Nick, we miss you, the sport misses you, and if you don't want it, let little brother Nate get back in there, because waiting for McGregor at this point does not seem worth it.
