By DjackESPN: Josh McCown wants to be the New York Jets' starting quarterback. He expects to win the job and keep it. Yes, he's still competitive after all these years and all those stops in his career. But the 37-year-old McCown also recognizes there's more to this gig. He's getting $6 million to be a bridge quarterback, which, in the language of the NFL, means he'll play until someone younger is ready to take over. "That's the goal," McCown said Wednesday, commenting for the first time since signing in March. "You go in to compete and win the job. If it changes, it changes. My mindset is to come and learn the offense, do everything I can to master it this spring and training camp. Then, if I'm the guy, play the position as well as I can until it changes. "Obviously, as a competitor, you don't expect that to change. You don't want that to change. I plan to go out and play well." Josh McCown, certainly is quite confident that he'll be starting for the Jets in September and why wouldn't he be. Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are both nothing, reports are Hackenberg is so bad they don't even want to show him to the fans, he's that atrocious. As a second round pick that's usually not a very good thing. These two quarterbacks not panning out could be the fatal blow to GM Mike Maccagnan's job. Petty looked decent at some points last year, although it was hard to tell with the leash they had him on. If Bryce Petty can't beat out a 37 year old journeyman QB in Josh McCown, then he has no future in this league.
That's about the only thing I liked about this McCown signing. Now, you get to see if Petty is worth the time, if he can't beat out Josh McCown for a job, then you know what you have in him. As for Hackenberg, there's no way he can beat out McCown or Petty, apparently the guy can't even complete passes in practice. When McCown wins the job it'll once again show the Jets have no answer or plan at the QB position, which has been the franchises downfall for 40 years. At least the Jets will only wind up winning like 2 or 3 games since McCown isn't going to win them many games, so they'll end up with the #1 or #2 overall pick. That means the Jets can draft a QB like Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen, finally giving them the potential for a franchise QB for the first time in what seems like ever. The Jets will manage to mess that up too I'm sure, just can't give them nice things they'll just find a way to ruin them. I'm sorry Jets fans, but this was really the last thing you wanted to hear. Have fun watching Josh McCown be your quarterback this year.
