Just when I finally begin to think the end was near, Dallas signs future hall of famer Jason Witten to a 4 year extension that'll keep him with the team until 2021. As a Giants fan I wanted to curl up in the fetal position and cry as this news broke today. Jason Witten has tormented the Giants for over a decade now, you'd think after torching us twice a year for decade we'd learn to cover him, but no every game against us he's wide open on what seems like every big down. Turns out, that's how it goes with most teams he faces, he's just an incredibly talented tight end.

Not sure how the money situation is worked out in this deal, I'd be surprised if Dallas didn't do this to free up some cap space to sign some defensive players. If they didn't then I really don't see the point of this extension right now, or the length of it. Witten is 34 years old, that means by the time he's in the final year of his contract he'll be 38. Not sure if his body will be able to last quite that long, although Witten has been exceptionally healthy throughout his career. Still, even the great like Shannon Sharpe, who have an unreal physique and diet, didn't last to 38. Tony Gonzalez who played longer than he probably wanted to chasing a ring only played to 37, and he's arguably the greatest to ever do it at that position. If those guys couldn't last to 38, I don't see Witten lasting to 38. Like Gonzalez, Witten's only mission at this point is to win a Super Bowl, and Dallas right now gives him the best shot at doing that. If the Cowboys win one within the next 4 years I bet Witten will just ride off into the sunset.

Until then though, he'll continue to ruin the lives of Giants fans everywhere. I'm fine with that, as long as the Cowboys aren't winning a Super Bowl giving him the opportunity to retire happy, I'm okay with getting killed by Witten a few more times. Nothing would be worse than after all these years he finally gets a ring, that'd just be a slap across the face.
