By DjackThe Mets will their selves to victory last night over the Phillies in 'Amazin' comeback fashion. After a devastating loss the day before against the Braves where Yoenis Cespedes was robbed of a walkoff homerun, the Mets make sure the ball had no chance of being robbed tonight. Things were not looking good for the Mets at all last night, they were down two runs and it was the bottom of the ninth, it looked like their fourth straight loss was inevitable. Jose Reyes had different plans though, he crushed a homerun to send the game into extra innings to give the Mets some new life. Familia came in to try and hold the tie, he blew it, no surprise there, he's been awful lately. So now the Mets are down 8-6 and their chances at winning this game look bleak once again until Asdrubal Cabrera came to the plate. With two men on and one out in the bottom of the 11th Asdrubal got a hanging breaking ball over the middle of the plate, he blasted a 3 run walkoff homerun, and he pimped it like no other. He just flung the bat up as soon as he crushed it and lifted his hands up high as he saved the Mets season. Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera haven't just saved the Mets on the field lately, off the field in the dugout these two are electric characters that keep the team loose. I love watching Reyes and Cabrera do their crazy antics after big plays, such quality guys to have in the clubhouse. The Mets are still in the wildcard spot and they have an easy enough schedule that it shouldn't be a problem staying there. Let's Go Mets.
By DjackIn a series in which the Mets should've walked away with at least two wins, they walk away with none. The Braves came into Citi Field and swept the first place wildcard Mets with little to no problem. The Mets are playing the weakest schedule out of any MLB team trying to get into the playoffs, they're basically getting handed a wildcard spot , and they still can't capitalize by beating up on the weak teams in the league. The Braves smoked Thor in the first game of the series for 5 earned runs, they cruised to an easy victory, and all Mets fans were distraught after their last man standing from last years young pitching core seemed to be struggling himself. I'm sure it was just a bad start, every pitcher has them, but it's something to keep an eye on. The Mets in the second game of this series tried to mount a comeback in the 8th, but came up just short falling one run shy of tying it, falling to the Braves once again. Julio Tehran pitched for the Braves and he kept the Mets lineup in check, he's been one of the only good consistent starters for the Braves this season. Last night was the must see game, the Mets were tied late in a game they needed to win. They needed their big star Yoenis Cespedes to step up, and he did just that. In the 8th inning with the game tied, Cespedes hit a deep fly to left field, it for sure looked like it was going to be a home run, Matt Kemp had other ideas as he jumped up to rob it, he missed, but the ball stayed in play. Cespedes was not hustling on the play so he only got a double, it should've easily been a triple which would've gave the Mets a sacrifice opportunity, but his lack of hustle cost the team. The Braves walked the next batter Granderson, then Cespedes and Granderson pulled off a double steal to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Well, the next two batters struck out, not a huge deal because the game was still tied right, wrong the Braves would take the lead in the top of the 9th. How did they score this run, well Jeurys Familia, and his lack of ability to keep runners off base backfired, and the Braves were able to scrape together a run. The Mets came up in the bottom of the 9th, they needed a walk off win, not just to avoid the sweep, but to give them the proper motivation to close out this regular season. The opportunity presented itself with two runners on, two outs, and Cespedes at the plate. Cespedes crushed a ball, it's clearly got the distance, all the Mets fans are ready to go nuts, the Mets are all ready to party themselves, and then Ender Inciarte leaps up and makes one of the greatest catches I've ever seen as he robs Yoenis Cespedes of a walkoff homerun to end the game. Will this be the dagger in the Mets season, this is where we see what this team is really made of, back against the wall after a bone crushing loss, how will they respond. The Mets are in a three way tie for the wildcard, but they have the easiest schedule going forward. They need to forget about this series, start with a clean slate, and find a way into these playoffs, I feel too bad for Mets fans to not see their team at least make the playoffs. Let's Go Mets.
By MukFifteen years ago to this day, Mike Piazza helped not only his baseball team, and not only his city, but the entire United States, when he hit a go-ahead 8th inning home run at Shea Stadium, in the first professional baseball game played in New York after 9/11. Baseball is nothing more than a game in the grand scheme of life, but what this simple game allowed Mike Piazza do was help lift an entire nation, who in every way possible, needed to be lifted. On September 11th, 2001 the largest terrorist attack on US soil was carried out, taking down the Twin Towers and claiming almost 3,000 American lives. Our country had never experienced an attack of that magnitude, and Americans from coast to coast felt it's impact. After the attacks, Americans, and specifically New Yorkers, needed something to go right; we needed hope, we needed joy, we needed a win. What Mike Piazza was able to deliver, was all of that wrapped up in one, 8th inning swing, that changed New York forever. September 21st, 2001 marked the first day that baseball would once again be played in New York, and the New York Mets took on the Atlanta Braves, under the bright lights of Shea Stadium. The Braves led 2-1, with 1 man on, and 1 out, as Mike Piazza dug into the box, facing Steve Karsay. With a 0-1 count, Mike Piazza took a fastball over the middle deep to center, giving the Met's a 3-2 lead, and getting all of New York onto their feet, hands in the air, cheering. Thousands of Met fans across New York, across the country, were cheering - an emotion that they had not felt since that dreadful morning, just 10 days earlier. No one knew if the timing was right. No one knew if they had chosen to come back too soon. But when the night ended, and the lights turned out at Shea, everyone knew; we would survive, and we would come back stronger than ever. I salute you Mike Piazza, and thank you for everything you've done for New York and the people who risk their lives every day, the FDNY and NYPD, along with the Armed Forces defending our freedom overseas. As the son of FDNY firefighter, and a true New Yorker, I am aware of how deeply this city and the people of it were impacted by 9/11, and while there was and never will be anything that can erase the pain and fix what happened, one simple game-winning homerun, gave an entire city - better yet country, a glimmer of hope, in their darkest of days. By DjackInjuries have turned a season full of optimism and World Series aspirations into a never ending nightmare for the Mets. Somehow, someway, the Mets have managed to overcome a depleted rotation aka the foundation of their team, and an injury plagued starting lineup. David Wright, Lucas Duda, Travis d'Arnaud, Juan Lagares, Neil Walker, and Yoenis Cespedes have all been injured for long stretches of time this year, this has forced other players like Jose Reyes, James Loney, and most recently T.J. Rivera to step up. We've all heard of Jose Reyes and James Loney before this season, but T.J. Rivera has come out of nowhere. He's a natural third basemen, but he has been playing second base recently, replacing the injured Neil Walker. In his last seven starts at second base he is hitting .440, has 3 homeruns, and has 6 RBI's, oh yeah he's also been flawless in the field. T.J. Rivera is one of those great stories, he's a local kid from the Bronx, went undrafted, and is now hitting his stride when he gets his first chance in the big leagues. I really like this kid, he's got one of those swings that you just enjoy watching, and the Mets just so happen to have second base spot opening up next spring. Neil Walker was amazing for the Mets don't get me wrong, but the Mets don't like spending money, especially when they don't have to, so if T.J Rivera can continue to play at level that he has been, the Mets may have found their next second baseman.
By DjackMarco Estrada made it through six innings last night without allowing a hit. This was a west coast game so probably 99% of you were sleeping while this was going on, well we had another pitcher come up just short of that elusive no hitter. Estrada was untouchable through six, I thought he was finally going to be the guy to end this stretch of failed no hitters. The seventh inning rolled around, and what do you know, Robinson Cano steps up to the plate. Probably the last guy Estarda wanted to see in that moment, for good reason, Cano roped a base knock off him, and put a crushing end to Estrada's hopes and dreams. I don't really care because Estrada is on the Blue Jays and I obviously hate them, but I do really want to see someone throw a no- hitter before the season ends. Rich Hill, Kyle Hendricks, Taijuan Walker, and now Marco Estrada have all failed to complete this task in the month of September, but they've been awfully close. Rich Hill got screwed over by his manager so he technically didn't even blow the perfect game he had going, maybe he would've been the one to do it if Dave Roberts wasn't an asshole. Someone will get one before seasons end, if not, Jake Arrieta, will have thrown the only no-hitter this year, the Cubs have done enough winning this year, let's not give them this too.
By DjackWell Yankee fans it was a fun two months, but our playoff aspirations have been shattered by the Boston Red Sox. We went into a 4 game series in Boston 4 games out of the division and 1 game out of the wildcard. That has all changed after being swept in demoralizing fashion, the Yankees are now 8 games out of the division, and are 4 games out of the wildcard. Talk about a turnaround for the worse, it's not even like we played like shit and deserved to lose, we had the lead in most of these games, but the Red Sox just kept coming back, and kept scoring runs. Hanley Ramirez killed us this series, he hit a walkoff Homerun in the first game, and finished the series with 4 total homeruns, looks like we found the next Yankee killer once Ortiz is gone. Betances was ineffective in this series to the point where he cost us the first game blowing a three run save, after that heartbreaking loss I felt like that was the end of the season right there in part to the brutality of the loss, but of course the Red Sox had to reassure our season was over by sweeping us, and making sure we left Boston with nothing but defeat on our minds. Game two of this series was the only game we should've lost, we had the lead late in every other game, but the bullpen just couldn't hold off these lethal Red Sox bats, I can't necessarily blame them we traded off our dominant bullpen, and now we are paying the price of being sellers at the deadline. I'm totally fine with it, I understand that we shouldn't have even been in the position we are after trading away most of our star power at the deadline, these rookies have just given me a new false optimism that has lasted too long. We're about two weeks from the beginning of playoff baseball, the Yankees hope are looking very very slim, but I wanted to thank them for giving me exciting, meaningful baseball for the past month, I couldn't have asked for anymore. Next season I want no mercy on the Red Sox, we need to exact our revenge, and spark this rivalry back up to what it was in the early 2000's.
By BobThis news comes as no surprise because it is literally classic Mets. Adam Rubin of ESPN has reported that the young ace is in need of elbow surgery and will not throw again for the rest of the year. While at first being diagnosed as only some forearm tightness has transitioned into an actual problem. At the most crucial part of their season, while chasing the playoffs they are now without another one of their biggest assets. On the bright side, the recovery time for surgery is only a mere three months which is no time compared to Tommy John, which means he should be ready to start pitching come spring training. The Mets rotation has been taking L's all season, with Harvey, Matz and Wheeler all either on the disabled list or out for the year. It is hard to believe that (besides Thor) the old man of the gang Bartolo Colon is one of the most healthy pitchers on the roster. They do still have a two game lead of the second wild card spot, but with a roster in shambles and your hottest player being Jose Reyes it is very possible they will be able to give it up. Everyone knows that the Mets have horrible luck, and this news has been the icing on the cake for a truly disappointing season after such a great run last year.
By DjackDecided not to write this immediately after the game last night so I didn't go on an ignorant rant about how I hate the Yankees, and how they can't be doing this to me. So I decided to wait until the morning to give my reaction on our worst loss of the season. The entire game the Yankees were ahead and I was as happy as could be, I was checking the Orioles score and they were losing so I was hyped we were about to pick up some serious ground in the division and wildcard. Oh how quickly the Yankees could change my optimistic mindset, the ninth inning came around, and we had a 5-2 lead with Betances coming in to slam the door on this game. I was confident to say the least, that was until Big Papi came up with two on base, and two outs. I don't think the Yankees have ever been able to get David Ortiz out in a situation like this before, pretty fucking amazing how badly he owns us, well he didn't crush a game tying homer like I thought he would, but he hit an RBI single. That brought up the future AL MVP Mookie Betts, he also got an RBI single to make the game 5-4. So Hanley Ramirez comes to the plate, at this point I'm just thinking c'mon Betances, just one out and it's over, forget about what just happened and get this batter. Hanley Ramirez had different plans, he sat on a fastball put it over the fence, and hit a walkoff 3 run homer to put a dagger in the Yanks season. Do I think our season is dead? No, but if we don't come out tonight with some fire and win the next three games in Boston, we're dead. It would suck to come all this way to come up short, so lets hope these Baby Bombers got a few more tricks up their sleeves, we could really use some magic right about now.
By DjackWe all know the young stud Corey Seager who has carried the Dodgers offense on his back for a majority of the season. He has made his case for ROY which he will win no question, and some might even put him in the MVP discussion. He isn't the only Seager having a fantastic year, his older brother Kyle who plays for the Mariners is also having an unreal year. I never thought too highly of Kyle Seager, always thought he was an average player that played on a bad team, but it seems like as soon as his brother came into the league he's been out to prove something. Well, last night these two brothers made MLB history, they did something that has never been done before, and when it comes to the MLB, records like that are hard to come by since the league has been around for like 150 years. They were the first pair of brothers to each hit 25 homeruns in the same season, they must have some real proud parents right about now. I know this is kind of one of those weird ESPN stats, but are you kidding me, in all the years baseball's been around no pair of brothers have accomplished this? I mean there has been some good brothers to come through this league such as, Paul and Loyd Warner, Sandy and Roberto Alomar, the DiMaggio brothers, Ken and George Brent, and more recently B.J. and Justin Upton. All these brothers failed to accomplish what only took the Seagers one year to do, hit 25 homeruns in the same season. Kyle has hit 29 on the season, leading his little brother by just four, but Corey is better in almost every other category. This is a day to rejoice their accomplishment, not a day to compare the two, I know their parents must be real proud, in just one season these brothers have cemented their names into baseball forever.
By DjackGoing into the all-star break the San Francisco Giants looked poised to make another run for a World Series title. A lot of people had them as the favorite at the time because not only did they have the best record in the league, it was also an even year, and they have won the last three even year World Series. Well, it looks like that even year run will come to an end this season, the Giants are just one game up in the wildcard, and are free falling fast. Somebody call Tom Petty maybe he can save the Giants season, I doubt it though, this team just looks like they're trying to lose games. They're 20-35 since the all-star break, they don't deserve to make the playoffs. That's an atrocious record and if they were somehow able to sneak into the playoffs they'd be embarrassed in the wildcard game, and just be taking a spot from a team that deserves to make it. I'm sure the wildcard teams will be the Mets and the Cardinals who are both right on the Giants tail, those are two teams I'd rather see duke it out for the final playoff spot, not this bum team that has barely been able to win a series since the all-star break. All the Giants best players Posey, Crawford, Pagan, and Span are all hitting below .200 since the all-star break, that's a huge reason why the Giants suck now, they can't hit the broadside of a barn. Every year the MLB needs one of these great collapse stories, you're just hoping that it's never one of your teams, well no one has to worry about that this year because the San Francisco Giants have volunteered themselves this time around. Tom Petty take us away... |
